Nutritional supplements come in various forms and are intended to provide nutrients that might not otherwise be consumed in sufficient quantities as part of a normal diet. Here are some of the more studied nutritional supplements that may benefit back pain patients.
- Aquamin is a red seaweed supplement rich in calcium and magnesium. It’s available as Aquamin Sea Minerals and Cal-Sea-Um. Preliminary studies suggest that Aquamin may reduce inflammation and help build bone.
- SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) is made from a naturally occurring amino acid. No one is sure how it might work, but some studies have shown that it’s as effective as taking medicines like Motrin or Advil.
- Fish oil is available in a supplement form. Fish oil breaks down into prostaglandins once digested. These substances are known to fight inflammation. 1,000 mg is good for your heart. Upping the dose to 2,000-4,000 mg daily is reported to be better for joint and back pain. Ask your doctor if larger dosages are O.K. for you. The important dosage to consider relates to the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in each capsule.
- MSM, or methylsulfonyl-methane, contains sulfur and may prevent joint and cartilage degeneration. Patients in an Indian trial had relief with 500 mg a day.
- Glucosamine is a compound that the body uses to form and repair cartilage and is available as a supplement. Glucosamine sulfate is thought to be more effective than glucosamine hydrochloride, though many products contain both. 500 mg three times a day is recommended.
- Chondroitin Sulfate is made from shark and cow cartilage. It’s felt to help build and protect cartilage. The usual dose is 400mg.
